One thing you quickly learn as an engineer-in-training is that projects don’t always go exactly as planned—and that’s often where the most valuable learning happens.

While working on a current urban park project, our team’s Environmental Site Assessment identified contaminated soil on site. Caitlyn Johnson helped coordinate with Emily Dyson at Environmental Health Consultants to review technical reports and participate in discussions with regulators to better understand mitigation and safety requirements moving forward.

Because the site already serves the community, the team is focused on clear communication, coordination across disciplines, and ensuring the final design creates a safe environment for both construction crews and future visitors.

For Caitlyn, one of the biggest takeaways has been seeing just how much collaboration and problem-solving go into engineering projects—and how much there is to learn from experienced professionals along the way.

Grateful for the collaboration and expertise from the teams at MK and Environmental Health Consultants.

During Engineers Week, MK’s Caitlyn Johnson participated in Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day, joining other women in engineering and transportation to connect with nearly 100 students from multiple counties.

The event brought together women across the industry to share their career journeys and experiences, giving students a firsthand look at the many paths engineering can take. During lunch, students asked thoughtful questions about college, course loads, and what it’s like to pursue a career in engineering.

Caitlyn also helped lead a roller coaster design simulation, where students worked in teams to design and build a model within specific parameters—highlighting the creativity, teamwork, and problem-solving that engineering requires.

Opportunities like this help young women see themselves in engineering—and we’re proud to have team members like Caitlyn helping inspire the next generation.
